Improvisation – a fascinating approach to extended techniques

Teachers’ Topic of the Day by Matthias Ziegler:
Contemporary music often asks for sonic areas, we have never really experienced before.
Having to perform extended techniques players sometimes just follow the composers instructions carefully, hoping that the result will be the music. Very often we are not able to fully integrate the new sounds into our own musical language (like scales and triads and harmonies..) This topic of the day will try to show an approach to the new sonic areas through simple improvisational concepts and will demonstrate how extended techniques help to develop the traditional techniques on many levels and broaden imagination.
